On 22nd October 2018, We celebrated #NationalObesityCareWeek at Neurology & Sleep Centre. The Speakers were Dr. Manvir Bhatia she is a Senior Neurologist and Sleep Specialist and Director of Sleep Medicine at Fortis Escort Heart Institute New Delhi and Neurology & Sleep Centre, New Delhi and Dr. Sonakshi she is a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist, She has  done M.Phil in clinical psychology from IBHAS and Masters in Psychology from Delhi University.

We have invited patients with high BMI’s so to give some tips & explain the whole concept of being Obese. Everyone introduced themselves at the onset. BMI , BFA were calculated for participants.

  Dr. Bhatia discussed definition of Obesity and What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) was derived from booking weight (kilograms) and height (metres).

BMI Categories-INDIAN

Underweight= <18.5 kg/m2  

Normal= 18.5-22.9 kg/m2  

Overweight= 23-24.9 kg/m2  

Obese= >25 kg/m2

BMI Categories-AMERICANS

  • If your BMI is less than 18.5, it falls within the underweight range.
  • If your BMI is 18.5 to <25, it falls within the normal.
  • If your BMI is 25.0 to <30, it falls within the overweight range.
  • If your BMI is 30.0 or higher, it falls within the obese range.

Dr. Bhatia then talked about the causes of Obesity which are: Genetic, Lifestyle, Metabolic, Medications, Hormonal condition etc. She further explains about the ” Causes of Obesity’- Early Death, Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart Disease, Stroke, Cancer, Join pain, Sleep Apnea, Psychological Impairment.

Dr. Sonakshi took the discussion further on ” Treatment of Obesity” in which she focused on ” Behavior Modification” that includes- Setting of Goals: Should be specific, Time bound and Realistic, Rewarding Yourself (if you have lose certain kilos), Go for a walk (but with a companion like friend/neighbor).

The management of Obesity consist Lifestyle modification and eat in smaller portions and take time to eat slowly so you get the feel of mindfulness early. These were discussed by Ms Saman-Health Coach.

Patients were asked to tell their stories especially what are the main obstacles or failures to lose weight. The chief reason Laziness/Lack of motivation etc.

In the event we discussed that if ever one feel the urge to eat something sweet then have fruits instead of “mithai” or sweets as fruit can give two benefits one they will kill the urge to eat sweet and second gives our body fibers. We also gave our patient a worksheet of “Food contact in which they will be writing their short-term goals, identify barriers and give themselves reward. Our event ended with a healthy tea & snacks.

To conclude -obesity is a common problem, which is associated with significant health issues and require constant long-term planning of self-motivation and workout.
