What is Video EEG (V-EEG)?

A Video EEG (V-EEG) combines continuous EEG Recording (Detect Electrical Activity Of The Brain Via Putting Some Sensors On The Scalp With The Help Of Conductive Paste) With Simultaneous Video Monitoring. This Means We Record Not Just The Brain Waves, But Also Your Physical Movements And Behavior During The Test. This Is Extremely Helpful Because Many Brain Conditions – Like Epilepsy Or Sleep Disorders – Cause Visible Changes In Behavior That Need To Be Captured And Correlated With Brain Wave Changes.

Why is Video EEG Needed?

V-EEG is Recommended When:

  • Seizures Or “Fits” Are Suspected But Not Confirmed By Routine EEG
  • You Have Episodes Of Night Terrors, Sleep walking, Sleep talking, Or Sudden Abnormal Behaviors During Sleep
  • There Is Unexplained Loss Of Consciousness, Fainting Spells, Or Jerky Movements
  • You Are Already Diagnosed With Epilepsy, But Doctors Need To Pinpoint The Exact Type And Location Of Seizure Activity Before Treatment Or Surgery

Symptoms & Causes – When to Consider V-EEG

You Should Discuss A V-EEG With Your Doctor If You Have:

  • Recurrent Unexplained Spells Of Blackouts, Shaking, Or Confusion
  • Nighttime Episodes That Scare You Or Your Family (Screaming, Thrashing, Walking)
  • Uncontrolled Epilepsy Despite Medications
  • Abnormal Behavior In Sleep That Might Be Seizure-Related

Conditions Detected With V-EEG

  • Epilepsy & Seizure Disorders (Generalized Or Focal Seizures)
  • Non-Epileptic Events (Psychogenic Seizures)
  • Sleep Disorders (Parasomnia, REM Behavior Disorder, Night Terrors)

Accuracy of V-EEG

V-EEG Is Considered The Gold Standard For Seizure Diagnosis. By Recording Brain Activity For A Longer Time And Correlating With Video, We Can Achieve:

  • 90–95% Accuracy in Detecting Epileptic Discharges
  • Differentiation – Helps Distinguish Epileptic Seizures From Non-Epileptic Events (Like Psychogenic Seizures, Fainting Spells, Sleep Disorders) With Over 90% Accuracy In Most Studies.
  • Sensitivity – Captures Subtle Or Nocturnal Seizures That May Be Missed In Routine Or Short EEGs.
  • Continuous Long-Term Monitoring Increases the Chance Of Capturing Actual Seizure Events.
  • Very High Specificity – Because Video Is Recorded Along With EEG, Neurologists Can Correlate Visible Symptoms (Body Movements, Facial Expressions And Behavioral Changes) With EEG Patterns, Reducing False Positives.
  • Better Planning Of Treatment And Surgery If Needed

This Level Of Precision Ensures Patients Receive The Right Diagnosis And Right Treatment– – – Avoiding Unnecessary Medications Or Delays.

How is VEEG Performed?

Preparation for Patient:

  •  Before Performing The Video-EEG Test, A Technician Will Give You A Few Instructions As Follows –
  • You May Be Asked To Sleep Less The Night Before To Promote Natural Sleep During The Test
  • You Must Wash Your Hair And Dry Them Properly Before Coming For The Test.
  • Don’t Apply Any Hair Oil / Gel After Hair Wash.
  • You Can Take Your Routine Medications.
  • Fasting Is Not Required; You Can Take Your Breakfast, Lunch, Or Dinner.
  • Avoid Caffeine Before The Test
  • You Can Carry Your Comfortable Clothes, Sheet & Pillow, Etc.

Preparation for Technician:

  • The Room Is Kept Clean, Dark, And Quiet, At Your Comfortable Temperature And In Dim Light.
  • Complete Instructions Are Given To You So That You Can Relax, And Then The Recording Will start.
  • A Technician Should Check The Audio, The Video Is On & Camera Is On Focus
  • There Can Also Be A Small Music System To Help You Relax
  • Technician Putting Electrode On Patient’s Scalp After Taking Consent
  • If Technicians See Any Event During Recording, They Should Write The Timing Of The Event And Give A Few Commands To The Patient, Like: Tell Your Name, Raise Your Right Hand, Remember Few Words – Pen, Water, Apple, etc.
