Yes, the patients should be on regular follow up with their treating physicians. The reasons for this are explained below:
OSA is also a chronic disease such as Diabetes, asthma, hypertension, heart disease, etc. A regular follow up is necessary for:
- Continuous evaluation of patients with OSA is important to detect any medical complication which can arise due to OSA like hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, etc.
- Also, if there have been improvements in your health such as weight loss or improvement in B.P. or have undergone weight loss surgery, to assess the symptoms of sleep apnea and make changes to the treatment plan
- If any side effects related to PAP are observed, or you are not able to use the PAP regularly, your sleep expert/doctor should be there to help you.
Conclusion: sleep apnea if left untreated can cause high blood pressures, diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, accidents and even sudden death. Thus, regular follow ups are important so that the sleep apnea is well controlled.
