Some people say it feels like a clamp squeezing the skull. Often called stress\u00a0headaches, they\u2019re the most common type for adults.<\/p>\n<p>When you get them less than 15 days per month, they\u2019re called episodic\u00a0tension headaches. If they happen more often, they\u2019re called chronic.<\/p>\n<p>Up to 80% of adults in the U.S. get them from time to time. About 3% have chronic daily tension headaches. Women are twice as likely to get them as men.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no single cause for them. Most of the time, they\u2019re triggered by stress, whether from work, school, family, friends, or other\u00a0relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Episodic ones are usually set off by a single stressful situation or a build-up of stress. Daily strain can lead to the chronic kind.<\/p>\n<p>This type of\u00a0headache\u00a0doesn\u2019t run in families. Some people get them because of tightened muscles in the back of the neck and scalp. This muscle tension can come from:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Not enough rest<\/li>\n<li>Bad posture<\/li>\n<li>Emotional or mental stress, including\u00a0depression<\/li>\n<li>Anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Hunger<\/li>\n<li>Low iron levels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For others, tightened muscles aren\u2019t part of tension\u00a0headaches, and there\u2019s no clear cause.<\/p>\n<p>A few common ones are:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Mild to moderate pain or pressure in the front, top, or sides of the head<\/li>\n<li>Headache\u00a0that starts later in the day<\/li>\n<li>Trouble sleeping<\/li>\n<li>Feeling\u00a0very tired<\/li>\n<li>Irritability<\/li>\n<li>Trouble focusing<\/li>\n<li>Mild sensitivity to light or noise<\/li>\n<li>Muscle aches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For prevention, you can:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Take medications<\/li>\n<li>Avoid the causes or triggers<\/li>\n<li>Manage your stress or learn relaxation techniques<\/li>\n<li>Practice biofeedback<\/li>\n<li>Try home remedies, like a hot bath, ice packs, or better posture<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over-the-counter (OTC) painkillers\u00a0are often the first treatments doctors recommend for tension headaches.
